DEWALT DW618K 2-1/4 HP Electronic Variable Speed Fixed Base Router with So Start Kit

This fixed-base D-handle router from DeWalt has all the design features to make it a popular choice with woodworkers and professional carpenters for freehand routing. The tool's powerhouse is a smooth-running, 12 amp, 2-1/4-horsepower variable-speed motor with soft start and a spindle lock. It offers more than enough power to make precise, clean cuts in tough hardwood materials without bogging down. A micro-fine adjustment ring is used to dial in the height setting at 1/64-inch increments, so the motor itself doesn't need to be turned, and as a consequence, the position of the switch and cord doesn't change every time your cut-depth does. This same motor can be used with DeWalt's DW6182 plunge base or their DW6184 two-handle fixed base, and DeWalt has thoughtfully made motor removal and base changing a quick and easy, tool-free operation. As finishing touches, the toggle switch on the motor (switched on for operation and overridden by the locking trigger in the D-handle grip) is sealed against dust penetration, and the cord is fully detachable for use with other DeWalt bases and to protect it in storage. DeWalt's engineers and designers clearly spent a lot of time making sure this router package addressed every need a woodworker could have, and the result is a tool that stands with the best in its price range. This model includes a carrying case. --Brian Trinen

 "DeWalt DW618K" 2005-07-21
By N. Oswald (Virginia)
Love the soft start and the quick release features. Sure beats the PC hand screw which always needed a plier to tighten enough. Also find the shaft lock really nice. No need to manage two wrenches at a time to tighten the bit. The power advantage over another of my routers for a small price difference well worth the added cost.

"This is a very good router" 2005-03-12
By Scott Pointon (Crest Hill, IL United States)
I debated between this router and the comparable Bosch model for a while before finally choosing the DeWalt. Three things sold me on this router: the depth adjustment ring, the easy motor removal, and the power.

After using it in my router table I can say that all three of those features are absolutely top notch. I really like the depth adjustment ring - this makes changing bit height in my router table VERY easy and precise (no more spinning the motor housing). The easy motor removal is a plus too - all you do is release the motor lock (one handed I might add) and then squeeze the quick release tabs on each side of the motor housing to cause the motor to slide right out of the base. Thats it - it could not be simpler.

As for power, I have not tried to spin any huge bits in this thing, but I have used some serious ogee bits in white oak, poplar, and pine. In every case, the motor handled the cuts in one pass without bogging down at all and the cuts were super smooth and burn free (I use Freud bits). In my experience, the electronic variable speed works very well.

The only drawback of this tool (and the reason I am not rating it 5 stars) is that I find the bit changing to be cumbersome. I have an older Ryobi router with a fantastic spindle lock that allows you to "lock" the spindle and then use both hands for the bit change. On this DeWalt, there is a spindle lock, but it consists of a spring loaded button that must be held in WHILE you are turning the wrench with the other hand. I feel this could have been designed better.

Overall, this is a great tool at a fair price. If I could do it all over again I would buy this same router.

 "One BAD-ASS Machine!" 2004-11-10
By Jamie Marsh (MD, USA)
I've been working as a carpenter for more than 18 years, and this is by far the best small router I've used. Not only is it powerful, but it's light, well-balanced, and operates smoothly. It's like having a giant shop router in the palm of your hand. If you're looking for a router, I highly recommend the compact and versatile Dewalt DW618K - it kicks ass at the job site.

 "disappointment" 2008-02-11
By S. Olson (dayton ohio)
purchased for mounting in a table--my mistake. at 2.25hp, it is underpowered for that use. overall, the tool seems cheap--terrible switch, imprecise fit to base causes difficulty in depth changes, above the table feature misleads you into thinking this tool is ok in a table. and, the adjustments are only possible by reaching under the table and helping the lift both up and down. removing the motor from the base is nearly impossible after it has been used, as it gums up the already too tight tolerances--tried "opening up" the cast base to no avail. mineral spirits followed by silicone spray works briefly. do not try to use a panel raising bit (my bad, again). did fine on sticks and copes and it seemed to work ok for about two panels, then the motor slowed erratically, followed by a lot of smoke--not from burning wood, from burning motor. toast. admittedly, i abused it, but even for small work in keeping with its design intent, i disliked and regretted buying the router from the start. cant say i regret its demise. will be buying the correct 3.5hp milwaukee. already have a 2.25 milwaukee and love it. all said, though, the price was attractive, at least.

 "Excellent router" 2008-01-10
By Y. Cho (Columbus, OH)
Delivery took just two days for free super saving.

This one has so many nice features that make woodworking a fun.

Bit can be changed above the table. Just push up the bit and lock it with auto lock. Because of extended spindle shaft with auto lock, I've never changed router bit this easy. Also height ajustments are a snap....easily done with one hand. I can do either way, just turn the adjustment knob or use above the table adjustment knob that provided. It starts real soft and runs very very quiet even in 20k rpm.

I found two cons though very minor. It doesn't have a light. And the location of screw holes for table mount are different than those of 3-1/4 HP Freud router. So I had to make two more holes in my router table plate.

"Freud FT1700VCEK 2-1/4 Horsepower Variable Speed Fixed Base Router" 2007-11-28
By Danimal T (Lily Lake, Illinios USA)
I bought this specifically for a router table so the ability to change bits without a big hassle & adjust the depth & lock from the top without the need for a separate router lift (VERY expensive) was the main features I was interested in this. The built-in variable speed control is just a bonus. The fact I found one on Amazon for such a deal was even better! The power switch is a bit weird, but I plan to mount a safety power switch to the table so it will not be used other than to make sure it is locked on. As mentioned in another review, I too noticed the above table lock release did not tighten sufficient to hold, but tech support told me to lightly tighten the hex screw on the outter lock & it took care of that. I am looking forward to using this more after I get the table totally done.

 "Router Table Use" 2007-07-29
By Mr Earl (Little Rock, AR USA)
The Freud FT1700 router is great for use in a router table. The ability to change bits without removing the router is a definite plus. Two options are available - either using the special adjusting tool above the table or actually looseing the router lock and raising it from below.

"Disappointingly poor quality, broken too soon!" 2007-05-23
By David Arnold (HARRISBURG, PA USA)
It has been 6 months since I mounted it in my table saw extension. Despite only occassional use the RPMs vary wildly with loading and it seems to have lost some significant power. I am sending it to Freud for repair. Although changing cutters from above the table is nice, all the raising and lowering of the motor is done from beneath the table. I have found it easier to adjust the precise cutter height by reaching under the table as the adjusting hole plugs with sawdust almost immediately. In addition, the height adjustment is very crudely executed with tremendous play between the base and the motor which shifts when the crude locking lever is engaged. These combine to undermine any pretense at precision. For a company that makes such precise blades and cutters I had expected a much higher standard of execution.
